HISTORY
While most people outside the cities prepared their own meals in the Middle Ages, so-called cookshops began to appear in the growing urban centers from the middle of the Middle Ages. These establishments offered ready-to-eat meals for sale without having to be ordered in advance. With the expansion of cities and the increase in trade and travel, the demand for such cookshops also grew.
The operators of these medieval fast food restaurants chose strategic locations such as market squares or busy city gates to serve both locals and travelers. In some cities, such as Norwich and Bristol, there were even dedicated streets known as 'Cook Street' or 'Cooks Lane' where the cookshops were concentrated. This underlines the tendency of similar trades to cluster together in the medieval townscape.
